Distressed "Got Frame" Tutorial by Andrea!

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

We have a special treat for you today! Several of you asked how Andrea made the frame in this layout that was featured during our Online Crop this past weekend so Andrea was kind enough to provide us with a tutorial!

Today I am going to show you how I created this framed layout.  I really enjoy using this distressing technique.  I love to get my fingers all messy.  It's almost like being back in kindergarden.

You will need...
12x12 sheet of chipboard
cutting mat
Xacto Knife
ruler
marker
craft sheet
hole punch/cropadile
glue (your choice)
acrylic paint (how many and colors are up to you)
string of beads or ribbon
scotch tape
double sided tape
distressed ink and applicator

On to the fun part...
You will start with the 12x12 chipboard sheet.
Using your ruler and marker, measure out your frames.  I made my outside frame an inch wide.  Then I left a half inch gap between the outside frame and the middle frame.  The middle frame is about 3/4 inch wide.  Then again I left half and inch between the 2nd frame and the center.
Then with the frames on a craft sheet, add paint to all the frames.  I used my fingers to spread the paint on the frames.   I also used 3 colors of paint and painted in spots all over the frames creating a camo/cow kind of print.  Don't worry about making a mess or the edges.  Let Dry completely. You can really make this as interesting as you wish. This technique can also be used on plain or black chipboard.  I just wanted my background to match my embellishments.  I have also applied this technique to heavy cardstock.  You could also use inks instead of acrylic paints. Hmm the possibilities.
After the paint has dried add a line of glue.  I used Elmers Glue.  Smear the glue on part of the frame.  You do not want the glue to dry, so work in sections. Make sure the whole section is covered with a thin layer of glue.
Immediately after applying the glue add a line of white acrylic paint on top of the glue you just applied.  You want to cover the glue but not mix the paint into the glue.  It's best if you just slide the paint with your finger in one direction.  Be careful not to mix the paint into the glue.
Then move on to another section till you have covered all of the frames.  The paint will dry faster then the glue, which will leave you with cracks.  Let the frames dry completely before moving on.  If you are in a hurry, you can speed up drying time with a heating tool.  However, the heating tool will increase drying time of the paint leaving larger cracks.  I love this technique!  By using the different color of paints, it left my cracks in different colors.  Pretty neat huh!
After it completely dried, I punched holes from the center to the outer frame as shown below.
I then flipped over the middle section and taped the string of beads on to the back on all 4 corners.  After flipping the outer frames over I strung the beads through the second frame and then to the outer frame.
This is the frame flipped over after I strung the frames together with the pearls. (Below) I adjusted the frames so they were centered and the pearls pulled tight on all 4 corners.
Then I flipped the frame over and cut the excess pearl strand. Then secured the end with tape.
I added double sided tape to all the sides and center of each frame.  Then I removed the orange backing of the tape.
I adjusted the frames so they were exactly how I wanted them.  Making sure they were all centered perfectly.  I then placed the paper print side down onto the double sided tape, then pressed firmly.
Then flip it over and everything is lined up perfectly.  I love this paper by BasicGrey.  The circles look like chicken wire. lol  Pretty cool for an outside picture. I then distressed the frame a little more using Weathered Wood Distressed Ink and an applicator.  I inked just the outer edges so it gave it a little weathered look.  Then finally, I added some yummy corner hardware from Tim Holtz.
And that is it!
Isn't that a fun background?  I really enjoy creating with this technique.  Messy fingers and all. :)

Quick Scrap - Barb O-

CONGRATULATIONS TO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!CHERIE!!!

! Please email BarbO withing 7 day of 5/14/11 to claim your prize at bugbites411@gmail.com

That's right, we have one hour to get you to the finished product.
So hold onto you scissors & glue sticks, and let's get started.

This challenge is meant to be done in 1 hour – at the end of the hour you will end up with a cute piece of wall art.

The more impulsive you are with selecting your papers, the better the results.

Using a timer, complete each step within the time allowed before progressing to the next one.
If you go over by a minute, no worries, since some steps you may find take less than the time allowed.

Time is ticking so let’s
GO!

Step 1: Basic supplies needed- you have 4 minutes to grab the following items:
  • Scraps of 10 - 12 different papers all shades of one color approx 2”x3
*Example, if you pick green, select 10-12 scraps of paper that are different patterns and shades of green. I decided on Blue.
  • 2 white or beige 8”x8” pieces of card stock
  • Misc scraps of ribbon, buttons, chalk, adhesive, brads, scissor, pop dots, stickles, etc *I know you all have these things handy in your basic scrap supplies- these items can be used in addition to the required items in each step to personalize each tag to your own style, but not necessary.

Do not spend a lot of time selecting paper. This works best if you just grab things quickly.

Ok- we have approx 50 minutes remaining. This is where the fun begins.
Set your timer now and Scrap!

Step 2: you have 8 minutes to Cut 6 tags that measure 3” tall from one of the 8” square white or beige pieces of card stock you gathered in the step 1.

*If your tag does not measure 3” it’s ok, but closer to 3” will be better. Tag can have a hole punched at top or not, your preference.

Some ideas for cutting tags:
  • Use any Cricut cartridge- I like Tags, Bags, Boxes and More
  • Tag punch like the Creative Memories tag punch
  • Small hardware store tags in your stash.

Well done!!

The next steps all require using one of the tags you just cut and your scraps of monochromatic papers. Feel free to use chalks, stickles, etc to enhance the required supplies, but remember, you must stay within the time when at all possible.

Step 3… Tag 1: use ribbon …in 7 minutes use 2 pieces of scrap paper, a piece of ribbon/bakers twine to decorate a tag

Step 4: …Tag 2: use a letter …in 6 minutes use 2 scrap papers and a letter to decorate your tag.
*Letter can be any size as long as it fits on the tag, upper or lowercase, can be a die cut, sticker, etc.

Step 5: Tag 3: use 2 brads & a flower on a tag…. in 5 minutes use 1 scrap paper, 2 brads, and at least 1 flower to decorate your tag.

Step 6: Tag 4: use a single word or short phrase…in 5 minutes use 2 scraps of paper and add a single word or short phrase to decorate your tag.
*This could be a sticker, rubber stamp word, etc

Step 7: Tag 5 use a 3D embellishment on a tag…..in 7 minutes use 3 scrap papers and a dimensional item to decorate your tag.
*3D items can be metal, foam, fabric, felt, gems, etc

Step 8
: Tag 6: torn paper…in 4 minutes use 1 scrap of paper that has been torn to decorate your tag. Embellish with anything additional that you want, but not necessary.
Hint: I like to chalk my torn edge so it stands out more when placed on the tag.

You’re doing great- we are almost done.

Step 9: 8 minutes…Add a string (if you punched a hole) or staple a ribbon to the top of each of your tags if you wish or leave them as they are.

Add pop dots to the back of your 6 decorated tags and arrange them in 2 rows of three tags each on your remaining 8”x8” card stock. Chalk the edges of the 8x8 if you wish.

Congratulations you are done with a small piece of artwork for your home.

This can now be mounted on to a piece of canvas or framed in a simple 8x8 frame, which is what I like to do.

Here is a sample of one I did for Easter this year. I spent a little more than an hour, about 90 minutes, on this one because I cut more images with the Cricut.
By using scraps of small pieces of paper, these projects go together really fast.

Click here to see my similar project using more tags. Experiment with different shapes instead of tags. The possibilities are endless.

Journaling Tag - Lori

WINNER! WINNER!! IS

CONGRATULATIONS
Please email Lori at withing 7 day of 5/14/11 to claim your prize lori.apgar@gmail.com

Welcome to the Frosted Designs online Crop!! We have tons of challenges and games throughtout the weekend and hope you join us when you can!!

My challenge is "hidden journaling" and in my layout I have hidden a tag behind a photo.
I started with a basic sketch and some photos of my oldest and youngest boys during baseball camp in Arizona for my middle boy. They had lots of down time and had to keep busy during the camp.
I found the title, arrow and subtitles from Graphically Speaking and sized them on my Gypsy and cut them out.
]I put adhesive on three of the four sides of my photo mat in order to make a pocket for my journaling tag.
I added some hemp cord and buttons.
You can slide out the tag to read the journaling.
Graphically Speaking

Here it is!!!

Here is what you could win. You have until Midnight May 11th to post your LO.

Thanks for playing along.

Happy National Scrapbook Weekend! My challenge for you today is to create a layout/card/project using circles. There are so many options for this challenge: you can cut your photos into circles, use circle PP, use a circle punch, die cut circle paper....lots of possibilities! Here is the layout I have created:

And here is the prize I am offering to a random participant in this challenge:
