Sketch Along Tuesdays 11-30 Sketch

Tuesday, November 30, 2010

Are you ready for a new sketch? A sketch with endless possibilities and one that will unleash your creativity?  Well we have that sketch, and it was designed by Debbie:

We have a new sponsor and a great prize for our Sketch Along Tuesdays challenges for December:

The prize from Artfuldelight is their December kit:

Now let's see what the Design team has created using Debbie's sketch:

Fern

Fern had this sweet photo of her and her grand babies that she wanted to scrap using this fantastic sketch created by DT Member Debbie...  She had to do a little modifying but really likes the way it turned out..  She used some of her favorite papers ~ Lost & Found collection from My Mind's Eye, and the brads are also from the same collection.  She used the Martha Stewart and Sizzix-Tim Holtz punches, and then added a little bling!  But because this is a layout of her little grand babies, she wanted to add something fun.. So, she used a fun font for the title and also added a handmade flower  just to add a whimsical touch...

Joni

Joni used Crate's School Spirit line for this grungy & fun layout of her son & his 1st grade teacher.

Libeeti turned the sketch so it'll fit her Mom's wedding photo. She used Webster's Pages' and K&Co. dps and a lot of stickles and flowers. Libeeti said that the beauty of this sketch is that it can be used eigher on the CAS version, or on the multi-layers/many details lo.

Debbie had a lot of fun putting together this whimsical layout of her son and his dad.  She used My Mind's Eye Fine and Dandy collection and added an owl and bird from My Little Bit Of Whimsy along with an owl button from The Purple Pumpkin. She was happy to use up some ribbon and flowers from her stash.

All you have to do to win Artfuldelight's December kit is play along!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Cassie

Sunday, November 28, 2010

With a lot of gift giving occasions coming up more and more people are going to find themselves in need of some gift boxes.  With a few supplies that any paper crafter has on hand it can be extremely easy to do and can be made in a number of different shapes or sizes.  The gift box I am going to show you how to make today is 6 in. x 6 in. x 3 in.  Below I will show you the steps on a piece of white cardstock so it is easier to see.

Supplies Needed:
2 pieces of sturdy 12 in. x 12 in.  cardstock (in any color)
1 12 in ruler
pencil
craft knife or scissors
scoring tool
strong adhesive (I recommend either Zip Dry Glue or the Scotch Gold ATG tape)

1.  To make the main part of the box take 1 piece of cardstock and on each edge measure in 3 inches and using a pencil make a small mark.  You will do this step 8 times, twice on each of the four sides of cardstock.

2.  Connect the tick marks on the opposite side of the page creating a straight line 3 inches in from each side of the page.  You will end up with a grid like this

3.  You will now need to make a tab in each of the 4 corner squares to use for adhering the box together.  To do this place a rule from one corner of the small box to another and measure in a 1/2 inch.  Flip the ruler to the other side and make another 1/2 inch mark.  Connect the two to make a tab.

4.  Using either scissors or a craft knife cut out the 4 small squares at the corners minus the 4 tabs you just created.
When you do all 4 sides your cardstock should look like this

5. Using your ruler as a guide and your scoring tool score along the remaining pencil lines so you can now assemble your gift box.  I used a bone folder to make my score lines.
6.  Place an amount of adhesive on each of the 4 tabs and connect it to the side of the box next to it.  Lifting the sides until they come together.  Do this to all 4 sides and you will have a completed base for your gift box.
7.  For the lid of the box.  Take the remaining sheet of card stock and cut it to an 8 inch x 8 inch square.  You will then follow the same steps as above with the base, but instead of measuring 3 inches in on each side you will only measure in 15/16 of an inch in.  You want to measure in just slightly less than an inch so the lid will be slightly larger than the base and will fit over the base with ease.  When you are done measuring, drawing the lines, making the tabs, cutting away the squares at the side, and scoring the lines your lid should look like this.
8. Adhere the sides together and your gift box is completed.  If you are making the gift box for an edible treat as in my example above I strongly recommend that you line the box in waxed or parchment paper to avoid any grease spots on the outside or your box.

You can now either leave your gift box plain and wrap it or you can decorate it and forgo the wrapping paper.  To change the size of your  gift box you simply need to change how far in you measure on the sides and change the lid measurements accordingly.    Below are a list of other box sizes and the measurements you will need to use.

4 x 4 x 4 inch box measure in 4 inches on each side and cut the paper for the lid to a 6 inch square.
8 x 8 x 2 inch box measure in 2 inches on each side and cut the paper for the lid to a 10 inch square.

We would love to see the boxes you have created using this tutorial! Make sure to leave a comment for this post with a link back to your blog/gallery. Who knows... maybe your box will get featured on this blog!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial By Angela

Monday, November 22, 2010

With Thanksgiving just days away, it is a good time to think not only what we are thankful for, but WHO we are thankful for! If you are looking for a quick and gorgeous gift to let someone know you appreciate them, try this creative idea from Angela....
A Sneak :0)

Gather your supplies:

3 pieces of good quality co-ordinating  patterned paper
matching ribbon
various punches/nesties fro decoration
paper trimmer
scoring tool
double-sided tape

Decide on your main paper and cut to 24.5 cm X 22.5 cm

Sorry I have only worked in cm for this project (should be easy to convert though)

Punch a scalloped edge along the LONGEST side

Score 1.5 CM along the bottom of the longest side (opposite to scalloped edge)

Turn paper around so scalloped edge faces the top and score at:
1.5 cm
11.5 cm
13 cm
23 cm

BE CAREFUL not to score TOO heavily!! Just light enough to fold!

Cut co-ordinating patterned paper 8.5 cm x 25 cm
And a second piece 7.5 x 25 cm.
Score at
1.5 cm
11.5 cm
13 cm
23.5 cm

stamp with versa mark any image you like.
Put aside for later.

Cut along bottom score marks as shown below

Attach double sided tape as shown. Bottom left on INSIDE TAB, bottom right on OUTSIDE TAB and right INSIDE TAB.

attach left and middle tabs together and adhere to left bottom. Fold over to make box, making sure all tabs are tucked in.

attach your wrap around to the box.  I have learned from experience to slide the wrap around over the box rather than attach, as it sort of buckles!

Use punches or Nestabilities, stamps and ribbon to decorate your box in whatever theme you like.

Using a slot punch (mine is Stampin Up) punch two holes at the top of the box.

Thread ribbon through the two holes as shown below.

These measurements are for a 200g block of chocolate
Push the chocolate into the box.  This will let you know how much ribbon you will need.

Tie a little knot at the top of the chocolate to secure.

leave a little 2-3 cm at the end of the knot to use as a tab.

And VOILA!!! You can decorate to suit any theme….. Christmas, Easter or just even a thank you gift.  A pretty inexpensive way to give someone a present.

Now... it's your turn! Let someone know how much you appreciate them!

Click HERE to check out everything her store has to offer! You only have ONE WEEK to win this fabulous prize so make sure to get your project linked up early!!

Look at what our design team did this week...

Barb
Distressing is one of Barb's favorite techniques and she had a lot of fun on this layout! Everything got distressed! She used her Tim Holtz paper distress for a lot of the edges on each layer and she inked some of the layers. She also used a stencil and applied Glimmer Mist to one of the layers!

Lori is working on her son's high school album.  She used her Cricut Imagine to make the brick background paper and distressed it with ink.  Lori cut out her son's schedule, matted it in brick red paper and distressed it with the Tim Holtz Distresser and ink.  She inked the journaling star and around the edge of her paper as well.

Libeeti

Libeeti loved this challenge so much! Distressing is her no.1 favorite technique. She distressed almost everything on this lo - from the pp, through the photo of her and her bf, the doilies, the dp, to the butterflies. She also made a distressed flower, out of fabric, and then she spread some stickles on it.

Angela
Angela has gone all out distressing this one! She sprayed Glimmermist over chipboard to make a mask of the title, torn and ripped the edges and sewn randomly along the edges and the photo.

Ruth
Ruth used My Mind's Eye papers and embellishments and had a bazzill cardstock that matched colorwise, but it was a 'tad' too bright.  She first used an edge distressing tool to rough up the edges of the cardstock.  Then she used a Tim Holtz foam applicator tool to tone down the color a bit using Tim Holtz Distress Ink in Antique Linen color.  She just dabbed her foam pad on the ink pad and then rubbed in half circles onto the paper about 1" into the cardstock from the edge.  To give it a bit more definition at the edge Ruth then added a little T.H. Distress Ink in Vintage Photo.  This time she dabbed the foam applicator into the ink and then just touched the very edges of the cardstock.
And check out this wonderful project by Crystal...

Crystal decided to alter an 8X10 artist stretched canvas for today's project. She used the distress techniques of lots of ink, paper crumpling, and distressing/tearing the edges of her photos and accents. Even the canvas is distressed. She first painted it brown, removed some paint with a textured cloth, added some silver, scraped some away with a nail file and the ran the same nail file around all edges of the canvas for some more definition.

Now it is your turn! We would love to see what you distress! Remember, each time you link up a project, you will entered for a chance to win the gift certificate from Memorable Seasons!!
