Designer Spotlight Featuring Joni!

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

We are back with another Designer Spotlight! Joni has been with Frosted Designs for quite a while and we are so lucky to have her!

5 Fun Facts about Joni...

  1. I am allergic to mushrooms, bleu cheese & bananas
  2. Just celebrated my 20 year wedding anniversary
  3. Originally from Ohio (Go Bucks!) and have lived in Phoenix for 17 years
  4. My husband coaches our son’s recreational basketball team and I’m “so involved” that when they inducted him into the “Coaches Ring of Honor” they called me to come up to the podium too…they call us “Team Parker”.
  5. I’m a huge Phoenix Coyotes hockey fan, although recently when we’re given 2 tickets to a game, I’ve been “giving up” the second ticket to my son (he’s 9) so he can go to the game with Daddy and I get a “night of scrapping in peace”…That’s a WIN-WIN as I see it!!

More About Joni...

I started scrapping in about 1999 when a friend asked for help making a mini for her mother for Christmas since I was “crafty”.  I had never done anything like that before, but she brought over a little kit with deco frames and when we were done, I knew there was more to it.  I ventured into a small LSS the next week and was forever hooked.  I ended up working at that LSS and later at another, both whom have since gone out of business.  I am currently a store liaison for Memorable Seasons (online store) after being on their DT and co-DT coordinator over the last 2 years.  I’m also currently an editor at Thinking Through Design and on the DT at Sketches in Thyme as well as here at Frosted Designs for the last 3 years.  I’m also on staff at Scrapbook News and Review Magazine.  This last assignment has really been a great experience and has pushed me into the Mixed Media world.  I’m still a very simple scrapper…I don’t layer much and I don’t use a lot of embellishments but I see my style getting a little less “practical” and little more “adventurous”.   Also, somehow I try to work my sarcastic sense of  humor into most of my work…even if only I can see it!

I work full-time in the IT department of a Health Insurance Company.  I taxi my busy son to basketball & football practices and games and to his Cub Scout events.  Between working full time, his events and scrapping, I don’t have time for much else.  My saving grace is my supportive husband who helps with the chores so I have scrappy time every night…and a son who doesn’t mind posing for photos or having a layout published of him in his underwear (he just turned nine…so he’ll probably hate it later..lol!).  Recently, I got into the card making world and find those quick projects to be quite fun too.  So with all that, I complete well over 300 projects per year (layouts, cards and altered items).  I may have to rent a storage unit, huh?

Here are some of Joni's Favorite Projects....

Isn't Joni great?! Thank you Joni for being a part of the Frosted Designs family!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Lydia!

Sunday, October 28, 2012

Hello Friends!  Lydia here with a gift box tutorial for you today.  Whether we are ready or not, the holiday season is just around the corner.  I love to find useful or pretty containers to give gifts in. For this project I transformed a match box into a gift box.  The box is small enough to be perfect for a gift card or something small like a necklace.

We use matches to light our fire place so when the box was empty, I added it to my stash of "will use for something" as any scrapbooker does.  I loved the way this project turned out so much that I made sure to buy a couple boxes of matches the next time I was at the supermarket.  :)

Supplies you will need include:

*match box
*paper
*double sided tape
*glue dots
*lace, ribbon, or trim
*flowers or other embellishments
*alphabet letters

I'm not very precise in measuring.  I usually just eyeball it.  The size of your paper will depend on the size of your matchbox.  I did measure for this tutorial and my box was approximately 4.5" x 8.5".  This includes some overlap of the paper.

Begin by wrapping your box with double sided tape.  It doesn't have to be completely covered, just enough that the paper won't come up anywhere.

I have only wrapped the outside of the box since the inside part is white.  Wrap the box and use another piece of the tape to secure the edge of the paper.

When the box is wrapped, you will have a seam.  Put a strip of the tape on it and attach lace or ribbon to it.

Then you are ready for embellishments.  I have chosen to use paper flowers and resin frames and attached them with Glue Dots.  You could use as much or as little of whatever you wanted.

Inside the frame, I have added a second scrap of patterned paper so it would stand out from the paper on the box.  I have used small alphabet stickers to put the recipients name on the box.  You could add any saying or phrase instead.

Here are three different ones I have made.  Now they are ready to have a small gift slipped inside.

I hope you have enjoyed my tutorial and will give it a go.  I'd love to see your creations.  You can link it up to the comments in this post or to my personal blog.  Thanks for stopping by today!

Happy Crafting!
Lydia :)

Fabulous Friday Challenge - Paints/Mists/Inks!

Friday, October 26, 2012

Happy Friday to all of you! For those of you in the states, I am sure you are busy with Halloween plans! This week we wanted to give you a challenge that allows you the chance to get a little messy! We are challenging you to use Paints, Mists or Inks on a card, layout or off the page project! How fun it that?! And easy too!! Our Design Team loved getting messing and they have some pretty spectacular inspiration for you!

Joni uses paper towels to wipe away excess mist or catch the overspray from projects.  One of those paper towels was punched into shapes & used on this layout.

Carol painted the canvas with acrylic paints, colored the flowers with Faber Castell Big Brush Pens and Pitt Artist Pens. She handmade the flowers.

Barb used inks and spray mists to color her banner and chipboard leaves.

Lydia painted the tin with acrylic paint and then glitter glam paint.  Hearts are also painted.

Melissa did these 8 x 8 mini canvases for Halloween using paper, inks, mists, and paint. She has more information on her blog (click on her name!)

Anita used mist on the layered papers, ink for stamping and crackle paint
 on the pennants.

Designer Spotlight Featuring Brenda!

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Today is Tuesday which means that we have a new Designer Spotlight to share with you! You are going to love learning more about Brenda!

5 Fun Facts about Brenda....

1) I love to read, especially mysteries and WWII history
2) My favorite breakfast is cold pizza and diet Coke
3) I recently started researching my family tree - it's as addicting as scrapbooking!
4) I'm a huge Disney fan - Walt Disney World is my absolute favorite vacation place
5) I got my first camera (a Polaroid Swinger!) on my 12th birthday and have been the family "shutterbug" ever since.

More About Brenda....

I started scrapbooking about 15 years ago when the major supplies were white cardstock, stickers and a black journaling pen.  My how things have changed since then!  I look at scrapbooking as a combination photo album and journal; love the idea that I'm capturing pieces of our lives and current times that future generations can look back on. (plus, it's just plain fun!)  Right now I'm on the design teams for Frosted Designs, Practical Scrappers and Get It Scrapped and enjoy hanging out at scrappy sites like My Scraps & More, Back Porch Memories and Scrap-Friendzy.  I love getting to know other scrappers and papercrafters through these sites and sharing ideas, inspiration and encouragement on-line.
Here are some of Brenda's Favorite Layouts...

Isn't Brenda one talented lady?! We are so glad she is part of our Frosted Designs family!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Joni!

Sunday, October 21, 2012

As I was trying to figure out what I was going to do for my tutorial, I was sitting at my "VERY MESSY"  scrapbook table, just fidgeting with some of the scraps and embellishments I had sitting around.  So, after putting two and two together....I knew where to start, although I had no idea where I was going!!!
So, one item I had was the inner cardboard from a roll of glue dots.  I was saving it in case I needed to draw a circle I guess?

And I didn't take a photo of the second item...but you'll see it in the next photo...
It was one of my son's crayons.  Yea, not sure why that's on my table, but I'm glad it was.

So, I just started coloring the crayon onto the "roll"
(At this point, I still had NO IDEA what I was going to do...no plan, I was just playing around)

Well, then I figured I need to "roll" the crayon wax back "off" of the roll....
So, I needed to heat it up, right?

And then I rolled it onto a piece of paper...

I had to add more crayon to the roll and reheat it and roll it off several times to get this effect.
So now I ended up with a base for a card that I can decorate later.

And after I finished it up, here is how it turned out.

So...look around...think outside the box (or in my case, don't think at all...lol!!)
You don't have to know the end result when you start...just create and let it flow and see where you end up!!  I use this technique a lot when I feel like I have no mojo...I just make a few backgrounds and then I can decorate them more later.
