Hazel & Ruby + Simply Stories = Beautiful Home Decor!

Monday, June 23, 2014

Brenda here, sharing a simple altered canvas.  I've had these Hazel & Ruby Stencils in my stash for awhile, and finally had an idea for a project to use them.

I started by spreading mod podge over a 12x12 canvas, then adhering one sheet of paper from the  Simple Stories Homespun collection with more mod podge.  One this dried, I laid out the letters for the words and brushed cream colored chalk paint over the entire surface of the canvas.  Then I removed the stencils to expose the patterned paper letters.

I added a couple of small heart stickers and painted lightly over those.  Once all the paint was dry, I added some pen stitching to the letters.

The Hazel & Ruby masks were very easy to use, and they're reusable!   Besides the alphabet, they also have some cute images.  I hope you're inspired to get out the paint and try some masking on your own!

Heidi Swapp Mini Stencils with Brenda

Monday, May 19, 2014

Hi, everyone!  It's my turn to share a project with you on the Frosted Designs blog, so I wanted to share some items using the new Heidi Swapp mini stencils.

I'll admit to being a little unsure about stencils when they first started to become so popular.  I saw so many cool projects made using stencils and various mediums, but I just wasn't sure what to do with them myself.  After setting aside some time to just play with the stencils and try various mediums and techniques without worrying about making an actual project, I got comfortable with using them and had fun in the process!

The Heidi Swapp mini stencils come in a little folder, with six stencils and six 3"x4" pieces of white cardstock.  I found it was easier to work with items by adding a small bit of adhesive to the back of the cardstock and adhering it to a piece of scrap cardstock, or directly to a craft mat.  Then I used washi tape to hold the stencil in position over the white cardstock.

Now for the fun part!  On the first project, I used two colors of Distress Ink and applied it to the cardstock with a foam applicator.  I started with the lighter color in the center first, then applied the darker color to the top and bottom and blended it all together.  I added a stamped sentiment to the top, some glittered heart confetti and a bow to end up with this card.

The second project was sooo simple.  I just took the Versamark ink pad and smooshed it down over the openings in the stencil, sprinkled on a little clear embossing powder and a little glitter, then heat embossed it. Added a stamped sentiment and a few sequins to finish it off.

For this next card, I spread molding paste over the stencil, then sprinkled silver glitter over the top and let it dry.  I added alphabet stickers for the sentiment, twine, and some glittered stars.

The next two projects used the same technique - spray mist.  One was on a white cardstock base, the other was on kraft cardstock.  Here are closeups of each, and the final projects using them.

I hope you're inspired to get out those stencils and play!  You just might find techniques you love and great ways to add those special touches to your projects!

Here is my example:
I used the words "egg" and "hunt" in my title, I used yellow patterned paper, I used cloud stickers and also used a flower sticker as well!  It's fun to see how many words you can use on one project!

If You're Happy and You Know It - Scrap It!

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

Hi, everyone!  Brenda here with my turn to post a project on the Frosted Designs blog.  There are so many cool things in the store right now that I had a hard time deciding what to use!  I started with the Jillibean Soup mini placemat, since that could double as my title and an embellishment.  Then I added some papers, stickers, twine, and a little bling and ended up with this page of my almost-always-happy grandson!

I started by adhering the mini placemat to yellow patterned paper. I added some pen stitching around the edges, then colored in the words "HAPPY" and "YOU" with a yellow glitter marker, to add a little sparkle and emphasis.  After adhering the chipboard stars, I added a little bit of Mercury Glass Stickles to them for more sparkle.  Here's a closeup:

It's always nice when different manufacturers and collections work well together.  The colors in the navy polka dot paper served as my base, so I pulled from those colors for my papers and stickers, and keeping them against a white cardstock base kept a clean and bright feel to the page.  Check out the Frosted Designs store for these products and so many other new items!

Friday Challenge - Clearly Transparent!

Friday, March 28, 2014

Hi, everyone!  Brenda here, with the Friday challenge for Frosted Designs.  I hope you'll join in the fun!

The challenge is to use something sheer or clear on your project.  Think vellum, transparencies, clear photo overlays, acrylic embellishments/alphas, and any other clear or sheer items you can think of.

For my page, I used one of the Project Life photo overlays over the photo of my granddaughter.  I printed the photo at 4" x 4" because I wanted to place it and the overlay on top of the orange paper for a little contrast.  Adhering transparent/clear items can be a little tricky sometimes.  To adhere the photo overlay, I squeezed a little bit of Tombow Aqua liquid glue onto some scrap paper, dipped a toothpick into the glue and applied tiny bits to the underside of the overlay, along the lines of the white letters.  This keeps any adhesive from showing through on the right side. I wrapped bakers twine around the left edge of the overlay as a little accent.

Supplies used from the Frosted Designs store:
Lawn Fawn "Hello Sunshine" collection kit
Project Life Photo Overlays #3
Elle's Studio "Everyday Moments" stamp set

Those clear acrylic flowers that have been in my stash forever.  I punched some small circles from patterned paper and adhered those under the flowers, and then added some enamel dots on top of the flowers.  The papers and metal flair are from one of my favorite paper collections ever, "Hello Sunshine" from Lawn Fawn.
