Fabulous Friday Challenge!

Friday, January 21, 2011

We hope you are ready for a challenge this week because boy do we have one for you!! This week we would like for you to use a transparency, vellum or acrylic on your card, layout or project! There are some really beautiful products out there... we have all seen them... but how many of us are brave enough to use them?!

We have a guest designer this week that did not have any problems at all taking on this challenge!! Please welcome Helen!

Hello! I'm Helen! I am married to a wonderful man who supports my addiction, and never asks why I need more stuff!

I have two boys, ages 20 and 16, and they keep me hopping! Oh, and a little pooch who is my princess!

I have been scrapbooking for about 7 years now, and find that I am very linear, like clean lines, and have to challenge myself more to not do the same old, same old. I was thrilled when Barb asked me to be a guest designer here at Frosted Designs! I just happened upon this site a bit ago, and love all the inspiration I get!! Barb and the design team sure pushed me out of my box for this weeks' challenge!!! One layout is very linear, the other I tried to shabby it up!!! Thanks for taking a peek!!

Thanks for joining us this week Helen! You can find Helen's blog HERE! Be sure to stop by and share some love with her!! Now take a look at what the rest of the Design Team did with this challenge....

Barb used digi's from this weeks sponsor...Stitchy Bear Stamps!

This week, Stitchy Bear Stamps is sponsoring our challenge!

"Hi my name is Stitchy and I am Co-Owner of Stitchy Bear Stamps...we started this store April 1st, No Fooling haha..I live in upstate New York with my husband and two TEENAGE adults haha, I do say that loosely as they think they run the show here, NOT...

I been creating stamps for a little less than a year now and I am totally addicted to the craft..I started about 4 years ago making digital scraps and I knew there was much more out there, so a friend of mine introduced me to digital stamps...and the rest they say is history...I look forward to seeing all the beautiful creations come through...good luck everyone..stitchy xoxox"

And here is the prize you are playing for.....

We can't wait to see what you do with our challenge this week! Be sure to stop back tomorrow to check out the amazing projects the Stitchy Bear Stamps Design Team did with this challenge!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Jessica!

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Hi all! Jessica here with you today from chilly Western Colorado! I've got two major scrappy addictions - ribbon and flowers. Today's tutorial combines the best of both worlds as I show you how to repurpose your ribbon scraps into these fun flowers shown here:
Here's what you'll need:
Ribbons in various lengths & textures - approximately 12" - 36" per flower
Low Temp Glue Gun
Bling, Brads & Buttons
Circle Punch
Scrap Cardstock
*************************

I'm really into big flowers lately (hence the headband my daughter is wearing!), so we'll start with that one:
You'll need about 36" of 2" double faced satin and a candle for this one. Add some tulle circles if desired.

Start by trimming out petal shapes from the ribbon. Don't worry - they don't need to be perfect!

**Please note: all ribbons have a different rate of flammability. Some melt - like the double faced satin - but some burn. Please be careful & perform the next step with water or a fire distinguisher nearby!**
Carefully melt the edges of your petals over a lit candle.

Hot glue them to a punched out cardstock circle, then flip over and add the tulle.

For the centers, I layered some buttons and bling:

***********************************
Next, we'll move on to the ribbon rosette:

You'll need approximately 12" of 1-1/2" ribbon for this one. Trim one end into an arrow, then glue the point to the center of a cardstock circle.

Begin twisting the ribbon around and gluing the twist onto the cardstock circle every 1/4 turn. By tucking the ribbon around, you'll hide the glue and mess that might appear on the sides of the flower.

Once you're done with rolling the rosette, you'll tuck the end of the ribbon on the bottom side of the flower, then hot glue to secure.

Here's what it's going to look like from the front. Add bling or buttons for the flower centers:

*********************************
Finally, we've got these polyester pinwheel flowers:

I started with six - 3" circles cut from polyester ribbon.

You'll start by folding those into uneven quarters. Hot glue the sandwhiched, middle part of the petal to hold it together.

From there, start layering the petals starting from the center, adding one atop the last one until your bloom is complete.

For the center of this one, you'll need a button and a fancy brad. Open the brad so the prongs align with the holes, then slip it through the button.
Need bigger button holes? Try using percision files to get the holes down to the appropriate size.
Once you've added the brad, open the prongs and "burp" the brad, allowing it to lie flat.

**********************************
I hope you enjoyed my little tutorials. Not only do these flowers make great embellishments for your paper projects, but they're great as jewelry & accessories too! I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.
Thanks for visiting Frosted Designs -
Jessica

We are so excited to have a new guest designer to share with you! Please welcome Melissa!

My husband and I have been married for 8 years and I am a stay at home mom to my three kiddos: a 5 year old son and 3 year old identical twin girls. I am currently attending school to get an associate's degree in Graphic Design and work part time from home doing marketing mailings. I spend my spare moments scrapbooking, making cards, doing cross stitch, reading and trying out new crafts every chance I get. I feel out of sorts if I don't have an in progress project to work on. Which is probably why I love scrapbooking so much....there is always more pictures to scrap!

And here is the beautiful layout that Melissa created to share with us...
Thank you Melissa for joining our team this week! Please take the time to visit Melissa and leave her a little blog love!! You can find her blog HERE!

Here is what our design team did with this challenge...
.
Libeeti used two separate photos of each of her boys, and one photo with both of them, to create this fun "beach boys" layout. She used #40 sketch from Scrap A Little (Jan sketch). The cs and the cream strip are DCWV and the matting is K&Co., the other strips are die cut and scraps. She also used seashell as embellishments and a ribbon flower made according to the tutorial also from Scrap A little.

Cassie
Cassie created this layout with 6 photos by using 1 main photo and 5 smaller accent photos.
DianaDiana thought these papers and stickers from October Afternoon Seaside were perfect for her Plymouth Harbor photos.

Jessica
For the center flower embellishment, Jessica used a circle punch to emphasize one of her favorite attractions at the B&B - the chickens that were running everywhere. She adhered it to the center of the flower, then added a 3D glaze and chunky glitter to finish it off.

Barb
Barb took advantage of this week's challenge to get caught up on some scrapbooking from a few years ago. She was also able to use up some supplies that have been in her scrapbooking room for years!

Now, we would love to see what you can do with 3 or more photos/pictures! Be sure to link up your project for a chance to win this week's prize!

So... each week we are going to pick a guest designers from the wonderful people who participate here at Frosted Designs! We couldn't be more excited to introduce our very first guest designer... Dawn! You can find Dawn's blog by clicking HERE!

We asked Dawn to tell us a little bit about herself....

Now... let's see what our design team did for you this week!

Cassie used the song Winter Wonderland as inspiration for this holiday card.

Jessica let this popular Christmas song become the title of this adorable layout featuring this sweet photo of her daughter!

Kim
For this layout, Kim chose to use the holiday song, Walking in a Winter Wonderland for her title. These are last year's Bo Bunny Gift of Love papers. Her song was inspired by the photo of her niece "Walking in a Winter Wonderland"

We would like to wish everyone a blessed Christmas! Hopefully after all the food is cooked, presents are opened and games are played.... you take some time for yourself and spend time in your craft rooms! And then... be sure to share your creations with us!
