Distressed "Got Frame" Tutorial by Andrea!

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

We have a special treat for you today! Several of you asked how Andrea made the frame in this layout that was featured during our Online Crop this past weekend so Andrea was kind enough to provide us with a tutorial!

Today I am going to show you how I created this framed layout.  I really enjoy using this distressing technique.  I love to get my fingers all messy.  It's almost like being back in kindergarden.

You will need...
12x12 sheet of chipboard
cutting mat
Xacto Knife
ruler
marker
craft sheet
hole punch/cropadile
glue (your choice)
acrylic paint (how many and colors are up to you)
string of beads or ribbon
scotch tape
double sided tape
distressed ink and applicator

On to the fun part...
You will start with the 12x12 chipboard sheet.
Using your ruler and marker, measure out your frames.  I made my outside frame an inch wide.  Then I left a half inch gap between the outside frame and the middle frame.  The middle frame is about 3/4 inch wide.  Then again I left half and inch between the 2nd frame and the center.
Then with the frames on a craft sheet, add paint to all the frames.  I used my fingers to spread the paint on the frames.   I also used 3 colors of paint and painted in spots all over the frames creating a camo/cow kind of print.  Don't worry about making a mess or the edges.  Let Dry completely. You can really make this as interesting as you wish. This technique can also be used on plain or black chipboard.  I just wanted my background to match my embellishments.  I have also applied this technique to heavy cardstock.  You could also use inks instead of acrylic paints. Hmm the possibilities.
After the paint has dried add a line of glue.  I used Elmers Glue.  Smear the glue on part of the frame.  You do not want the glue to dry, so work in sections. Make sure the whole section is covered with a thin layer of glue.
Immediately after applying the glue add a line of white acrylic paint on top of the glue you just applied.  You want to cover the glue but not mix the paint into the glue.  It's best if you just slide the paint with your finger in one direction.  Be careful not to mix the paint into the glue.
Then move on to another section till you have covered all of the frames.  The paint will dry faster then the glue, which will leave you with cracks.  Let the frames dry completely before moving on.  If you are in a hurry, you can speed up drying time with a heating tool.  However, the heating tool will increase drying time of the paint leaving larger cracks.  I love this technique!  By using the different color of paints, it left my cracks in different colors.  Pretty neat huh!
After it completely dried, I punched holes from the center to the outer frame as shown below.
I then flipped over the middle section and taped the string of beads on to the back on all 4 corners.  After flipping the outer frames over I strung the beads through the second frame and then to the outer frame.
This is the frame flipped over after I strung the frames together with the pearls. (Below) I adjusted the frames so they were centered and the pearls pulled tight on all 4 corners.
Then I flipped the frame over and cut the excess pearl strand. Then secured the end with tape.
I added double sided tape to all the sides and center of each frame.  Then I removed the orange backing of the tape.
I adjusted the frames so they were exactly how I wanted them.  Making sure they were all centered perfectly.  I then placed the paper print side down onto the double sided tape, then pressed firmly.
Then flip it over and everything is lined up perfectly.  I love this paper by BasicGrey.  The circles look like chicken wire. lol  Pretty cool for an outside picture. I then distressed the frame a little more using Weathered Wood Distressed Ink and an applicator.  I inked just the outer edges so it gave it a little weathered look.  Then finally, I added some yummy corner hardware from Tim Holtz.
And that is it!
Isn't that a fun background?  I really enjoy creating with this technique.  Messy fingers and all. :)
