Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Jessica!

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Hi all! Jessica here with you today from chilly Western Colorado! I've got two major scrappy addictions - ribbon and flowers. Today's tutorial combines the best of both worlds as I show you how to repurpose your ribbon scraps into these fun flowers shown here:
Here's what you'll need:
Ribbons in various lengths & textures - approximately 12" - 36" per flower
Low Temp Glue Gun
Bling, Brads & Buttons
Circle Punch
Scrap Cardstock
*************************

I'm really into big flowers lately (hence the headband my daughter is wearing!), so we'll start with that one:
You'll need about 36" of 2" double faced satin and a candle for this one. Add some tulle circles if desired.

Start by trimming out petal shapes from the ribbon. Don't worry - they don't need to be perfect!

**Please note: all ribbons have a different rate of flammability. Some melt - like the double faced satin - but some burn. Please be careful & perform the next step with water or a fire distinguisher nearby!**
Carefully melt the edges of your petals over a lit candle.

Hot glue them to a punched out cardstock circle, then flip over and add the tulle.

For the centers, I layered some buttons and bling:

***********************************
Next, we'll move on to the ribbon rosette:

You'll need approximately 12" of 1-1/2" ribbon for this one. Trim one end into an arrow, then glue the point to the center of a cardstock circle.

Begin twisting the ribbon around and gluing the twist onto the cardstock circle every 1/4 turn. By tucking the ribbon around, you'll hide the glue and mess that might appear on the sides of the flower.

Once you're done with rolling the rosette, you'll tuck the end of the ribbon on the bottom side of the flower, then hot glue to secure.

Here's what it's going to look like from the front. Add bling or buttons for the flower centers:

*********************************
Finally, we've got these polyester pinwheel flowers:

I started with six - 3" circles cut from polyester ribbon.

You'll start by folding those into uneven quarters. Hot glue the sandwhiched, middle part of the petal to hold it together.

From there, start layering the petals starting from the center, adding one atop the last one until your bloom is complete.

For the center of this one, you'll need a button and a fancy brad. Open the brad so the prongs align with the holes, then slip it through the button.
Need bigger button holes? Try using percision files to get the holes down to the appropriate size.
Once you've added the brad, open the prongs and "burp" the brad, allowing it to lie flat.

**********************************
I hope you enjoyed my little tutorials. Not only do these flowers make great embellishments for your paper projects, but they're great as jewelry & accessories too! I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.
