Tutorial Tuesday with Joni!

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

I thought I'd share a little something different with you this week...  Instead of a regular tutorial on how to make something or a cool new technique...  I'm sharing some things I do with one of my most USEFUL items on my scrappy table.....  SCOTCH TAPE!!  What..??  Yes, Scotch Tape...  After I realized how much scotch tape I went through, it made me realize I need to share some of the things I use it for...   read on to see what I mean.

When I work on a 2 page layout I ALWAYS tape the 2 pages together on the back... so I can extend my patterned paper all the way across the "seam" without having to worry about getting it lined up or having to match the pattern from the left to right page...  also useful when stitching across the seam of a 2 pager.  Then when done, just use an exacto knife and cut the tape (and pp if you went across the seam) and waa-laa, you've got 2 pages again.

Now also on this 2 pager, you can see that I have more tape... because I stitched on it and I didn't want to "BACK stitch" so I just taped the back side so the stitches don't fall out.  Also on a spot where my sewing machine got a little weird on me. And where I cut the stitching across the 2 pages.  So that's tip 2 -- Use tape to secure the back side of stitches (so no backstitching or unravelling).
Heres' the front of that layout so you can see the stitching on the front side.   (That's silly string on the dog..)

On to tip #3 - which is vaguely familar to tip #2 --- I also use tape to secure the back side of HAND stitching... so I don't have that "knot" on the back side of my layout:

Ok, here's another one... I have some embellishements that just don't like adhesive... I tried my tape runner, glue dots....and instead of going for the stapler (which I use a lot too)... well, on this one, I used scotch tape..hidden under my photo.  (I used 1/2 a doily embellishment..being frugal and used the other 1/2 on another layout).    Sorry for the glare on that second pic, it's the only way the tape would show up!

Here's that layout completed:

Ok one more...
You know your glue bottles and stickles bottles get clogged up right?
Well, I've seen gals put a pin IN the little hole to keep it from getting clogged, but then the pin got glued in there!!  I have a variation of that.  I still use the pin, but I just keep it closeby to "poke" the hole when I need to unclog it.  And when the tape breaks from pulling the pin in and out, I just put another piece of tape over it..one bottle I just threw away had probably 20-30 layers of tape..it was pretty funny...but it works!!

Tutorial Tuesday with Lori!

Tuesday, August 6, 2013

Hello - Lori here from ScrappinMyStressAway with a rolled flower tutorial for you today!

I am not a girly-girl so I don't stock pile flowers.  When I need them, I typically make them myself and today was no different!!

I typically use my cricut or cameo to cut out the rolled flower shape, but I know not everyone has a cricut or cameo so I hand cut the shape instead.  This way anyone can make some!!!

I picked up some sheet music at the thrift store.  I love using music sheets for flowers!  You can use any paper (cardstock, scrapbook, origami, a newspaper) but double sided papers look the best rolled up in my opinion.

I drew a circle in pencil in the center of the page.  My circle is not perfect, and yours doesn't have to be either.

Past experience has taught me what size circle will make the size flower I prefer.  The bigger circle is about 6 inches.  The smaller two are 4-5 inches.

You can see how big my biggest circle is in relation to my scissors.

I started cutting in a spiral from the outside in.  I left a small circle in the center.  After the flower is rolled up, you will put the glue on the center circle.

I use my McGill tweezers and Scotch liquid glue with 2-Way Applicator.  I use the bottom (larger) applicator.

I grab the very end of the spiral and twist the paper towards my left hand.  As long as you don't squeeze the tweezers handle, your paper will stay tight.

You can see how compact the paper gets as you roll it up!

Once you get to the center circle, gently squeeze the tweezers and slide them out.

Then let go of the rolled flower.  Don't worry - it will only unwind a bit!!

Put some liquid glue on the center and firmly hold the flower in place for a minute or two until the glue holds.

I repeated this step with the other two spirals.  When using flowers it is pleasing to the eye to use an odd number of them.

I hand cut some leaf shapes and inked them green.  I folded them in the center and inked the fold (shown below).

I had previously covered this composition notebook with this fun glittery bird paper.  I added a bit of washi tape down the seam and a vinyl title on the front.

I added the flowers to the side.  I like the sheet music paper as birds sing...a lot...especially the cardinal in my front yard recently :)

I set my flowers down above the title to place the leaves.  I used the same glue to adhere the leaves first (you can see the inked center fold here).  Next I adhered the flowers on top of the edges of the leaves.

I wanted to mimic the glitter in the paper, so I used stickles and a foam brush.

In the past, I painted the flowers with acrylic paint (before I rolled them) but this time I wanted to leave the flowers unpainted with a red glitter edge.

These rolled flowers are fun to make any size and add a nice 3-Dimensional touch to a project!!

Tutorial Tuesday With Channa!

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Hello all,

I like to make tutorials with materials that we already have in our home.
So for today i will show you how to make different background textures with items that you can find in your stash or kitchen.

For today's tutorial you need:

Sugar, Sand or Sea salt.
Gesso or modelling paste
Spray ink or paint
A mask
paper
A pencil.

I will show my sample with sand!

1. Take some sand, gesso and spray paint on a plate.
As you can see my sand is pink, i had it at home as i used it for some decoration.

2. Mix them all together and this is what you get.

3. Take your mask and add the "mix".

4. Take of the mask and let it dry for 20 min, or you can use your heat tool to speed it up.
If you let it dry naturally the paper does not roll up.

5. And voilla here is a "real wall"! the sand gives a very nice effect .

Sample with sugar
It's very fine and if you use a spray to paint it will dissolve a little bit.

Sample with sand
I personally like this one the best it gives such a nice look especially
when using this brick stencil as it makes it look like a real wall.

Sample with sea salt
As you can see the texture is really rough.

And this is what i my ending result:
I used it for a background of a card.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and try it at home!
Thank you for stopping by,
Channa
