Hello! Teresa Jaye here - today I'm bringing you a tutorial on using crackle medium.
I used the Tim Holtz "Caged Bird" Sizzix Bigz die and "Rock Candy" Ranger Distress Crackle Paint to create these adorable birds: (click on photos to enlarge)
Here are the supplies you'll need: Birds die cut from chipboard, crackle paint, two shades of brown ink (one darker and one lighter), inking tool, background stamp, clear or brown embossing powder, and dark brown or black pearls to use for eyes.
After die cutting the birds, stamp them with the background stamp using either color of brown ink and heat emboss. I used Ranger Archival ink in Sepia and clear embossing powder by Stampin' Up.
Paint a thin layer of crackle paint on the birds. The first layer will soak in so a thin layer is fine.
Let them dry.
After the crackle paint is dry, flex the pieces to encourage crackling then lightly go over them with the lighter color brown ink, the ink will seep in to the cracks so the crackle shows up. (Make sure you use permanent ink such as Ranger Archival or Staz-On at this stage because if you use water based your brush will pick up the ink and contaminate your container of crackle paint.)
Now paint on a thick layer of crackle paint. This will take a while to dry.
After they are dry, flex the pieces a bit in both directions to encourage crackling then go over them again with the lighter brown ink. Keep applying light coats of ink until you are happy with how they look.
Now go around the edges of the pieces and shade the lower portions of the birds and wings with the darker brown ink. I used Ranger Distress ink in Vintage Photo.
Adhere the wings and eyes to the bodies. Aren't they pretty? Look at what a difference between the plain chipboard and the crackle distressed pieces!
(the lower two birds were cut using the Spellbinders Bird Sanctuary die)
Here is my finished project. I also used the same technique on the Scrabble tiles (lightly sand the tiles first so the paint will adhere to them).
The rest of the details for this Love Birds Canvas can be seen here.
Thanks for joining me, I hope you are inspired to give this technique a try!

I left a comment earlier, but it doesn't seem to have stuck -- maybe my erratic Internet service due to storm conditions in So Fla! Just wanted to thank you for the great tutorial -- now I need to buy some crackle paint (when it stops raining!)
