SHOW ME SUNDAY BY: Melissa

This week I will be showing you how to create a really cool vintage style peg board. This is a fun and easy project that looks great.

Materials you will need for this project:

  • one plain wooden peg board (I bought mine at Hobby Lobby for around $2)
  • black acrylic paint (any brand, I like the cheap stuff :) )
  • paintbrush
  • Mod Podge, Decoupage, or Gel Medium
  • Textured Photo Paper
  • Your favorite photos
  • Twine
  • Hole punch or Crop a Dile
  • Sand paper
  • Distress Ink (Vintage Photo)
Step 1: Thoroughly sand your peg board with a normal grit sandpaper. Use a soft cloth to remove all dust before painting.
Step 2: Paint the entire surface of the peg board with black acrylic paint. I used 2 very light coats.
Step 3: While the paint is drying, pick out some of your favorite pictures to print to add to the board. I printed some of my favorite photos from our honeymoon trip to Italy 5 years ago. I changed them all to a sepia tone, then resized the images to fit into the spaces between the pegs. I printed them on Strathmore Textured paper on my inkjet printer. I wanted the photos to have a worn, canvas look to them. After the board is dry, trim all of the edges of the photos.
Step 4: Sand all of the edges of the photos for a distressed look. If you wanted to you could also lightly ink the edges.

Step 5: Using the sandpaper again, sand all of the edges of the peg board to remove the paint. The original wood color will show through at this point, giving it a worn look.
Step 6: Using the Mod Podge (or other medium), adhere your pictures to the peg board. I put a little on the board, then brushed some on the back of the picture, as well as over the top of the picture. Smooth out any air bubbles with your fingers or small brayer.
Step 7: Seal the entire project with the Mod Podge. This will help protect your photos from fading, especially if they are exposed to lots of sunlight. I use a gloss finish, but you could also use matte.

Step 8: Print out a few words that relate to your photos. Since my board has a travel theme I used words like "travel, explore, experience, and journey". Cut out the words and use the hole punch to make them into little tags. I inked the edges of all mine with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. Thread the twine through the tag, then wrap it around various places on your peg board and tie it with a double knot. I used a glue dot on the back to help it stay flat.
And here is the finished product!

And a close up:
