The Deconstructed Layout with Anita - Box Flowers

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

Hi everyone, how is your week going so far!
It's Anita here today and I have a project from my recent vacation to share with you!

Today's project is part of my new series the Deconstructed Layout
for today's tutorial we will be making a Box Flower- they
are so simple and so fun!

Here is a look at my layout,,
I used bits an pieces from several of my previous Frosted Designs Kits
for this layout. I am trying to work my way through my stash!

My papers are FabScraps and for my background I stamped
a large graphic design all over and gave everything a good spray
with Dylusions White Linen.

Start with die cut scallop circles- I have three sizes here - you can make your flower with one, two or three layers- totally up to you!. For each layer you will need 4 circles all the same size.

  1. Start by inking the edges, then spraying BOTH sides with water or (my choice) one of the iridescent sprays like Glimmer Mist.
  2. Lightly crumple the circles up into a ball
  3. Open back up and fold in half.

Ok- let's assemble our flower!

  1. Lay 1 piece down facing to the left.
  2. Add your second piece so that it is half on top of the 1st piece, facing towards you.
  3. Add the 3rd piece so that it is half on top of the 2nd piece, facing right.
  4. Add the last piece so that it is half on top of the 3rd piece and half UNDER the 1st piece.
  5. Use a little piece of liquid glue under each flap to secure it to the piece below it.
  6. Repeat with a set of smaller circles if you want to add a second layer.
  7. Use a brad in the center to secure everything together.
Here is a look at the box flower- fun, yes??
(I used the largest and smallest circles that I cut)
I have also used some KaiserCraft flowers and
Basic Grey die cut stickers.

Thanks so much for stopping by today!!
Have a wonderful week!

And don't forget to take advantage of this week's sale!

Need a Title?! Lori Can Help!

Thursday, April 3, 2014

What is in a title?  Well, I know I have several titles:  Wife, Mom, Sister, Sister-in-Law, Daughter-in-Law, Aunt, Miss Lori, Friend, Neighbor, Baseball Mom, Cousin, Instructor - you get the picture!!  Each situation calls for a different title, just like each scrapbook layout (story) calls for a different title.  You need to ask yourself ~ How do you want to title your story?

Take any photo (or set of photos from one event) and you can use several different titles.  The title depends on how you want to tell the story of this/these photo(s).  If your photos need several pages to tell the story, only the first page needs a title.  Here is an example of several titles for a birthday layout:

If you can't think of a title that fits the photo or the space you have left on the layout, it is time to get out of your box!!

Titles can be long or short, funny or serious, borrowed or original.  Titles can be a single word or headline, a mini headline or a set of title and subtitle.  There are no rules, just guidelines!!
Titles can be quotes, movie or song titles, song lyrics, a question, or a play on words.  I find inspiration everywhere for titles:  Pinterest, TV, magazine articles, nursery rhymes, stores - you name it!  I keep a notepad with me for journaling notes and title notes because you never know where inspiration will hit!!!
The photo I am using today is a slefie of Tanner and I at Disney last fall while riding the Dumbo Ride.  He loves when we take selfies together!!
I had many thoughts about what my title could be for this layout - Selfie Buddies, Riding Dumbo (again), Best Day Ever, I adore his smile...I cherish his hugs...I admire his heart...but most of all.....I love that he is my son, and So there is this boy....he stole my heart....he calls me Mom.

Last month I posted about journaling and using your own handwriting on your layouts (HERE) and I wanted to add my handwriting to my title this month.  I chose the last option so I could handwrite everything except He Calls Me Mom.
For my layout today, I used Heidi Swapp Teal colorshine to color my background paper.  I used Home Tweet Home - Word Play doublesided paper from ADORNit ~from the Love is in the Air kit.  I cut two pieces to layer under my photo.  I used the flowers and Tim Holtz Picked Raspberry Distress Paint to paint the edges of my papers and photo from A Moment In Time kit.  I used Picked Raspberry Distressed Ink Pad from the Sades of Spring kit. I cut "He Calls Me Mom" and the xoxo border with my cameo.
I wrote my handwritten part on a scrap paper so I can make sure it will fit on my page.  I decided not to write it all on one line because it would stick out too far.  Instead I wrote each segment on a line.

I hope you find titles a little more fun after today!!  If you need some help or ideas on Handwriting, please check out Sandee's video Typography and Lettering!!
I encourage you to practice handwriting part of your titles.  Join us here on April 11th for my next challenge (handwriting is a big part of it plus some ink/mist of your choice)- I would LOVE to see your layouts or projects!!!

Shades of Spring Kit is So Egg-citing!!!!

Wednesday, April 2, 2014

Hello to all my crafty friends!!!  April is here and Spring is in full swing!!!  With Easter coming up, I thought I'd make a few things to "get in the mood" and the Shades of Spring Kit was absolutely PERFECT for my projects :-)

First, I started by making an Easter basket!  I wanted it simple, but pretty!!!  I figured I'd gift it to my daughter's teacher when the holiday arrives :-)
Any who, here's a look at what I came up with:

Isn't it adorable?!?
I used various BG "Fresh Cut" papers from the kit, alternating them for the front and sides.  I also matted some left over strips and added them around the middle of the basket, all the way around!

I wanted a trim around the top but already used that fabulous tulle trim from the kit, so I got out a few paper punches and went to work!

I finished the front by punching out a few circles and matting them to a doily.  I took one of the AdornIt wooden birds included in the kit and colored it with Lindy's Starburst Pearls and various magicals until I achieved the color I was looking for!  I topped it off with liquid pearls around the circle!!!

For the "handle", I cut a strip from one of the papers and used one of my Martha Stewart punches to add some detail.  I topped it off with another coordinating paper from the kit for some contrast :-)

Now, what usually goes inside the Easter basket?!?  Eggs!!!!

Lots of them!!!  And that's exactly what is going in this one as well!!!!

With a little help from my Cricut Expression 2, I was able to cut out some eggs from the papers in the kit.  I added 2" strips to the bottom of each to add another egg to the back and create a dimensional piece that will hold, well, candy of course!!!!
Here's a look:

I started by taking the eggs and cutting about an inch off the base so I could make them stand freely!  Then, I inked all the edges for a little added color...  I also used my CE2 to create a die-cut bunny in the center of a couple of the eggs and added a small strip to another for minor detail!

I finished them with all sorts of candies (some were wrapped in tulle) that my daughter's teacher is sure to enjoy!!!

Well gang...  Thanks so much for stopping in and have a LUCKY day :-)

Hello everyone! Is it really April?! Wow! Where did March go?!  Well, we are getting ready to release the newest kit here in a few days so I thought I would give you one last look at the current kit, A Moment in Time! Recently my daughter made the decision to get baptized! We were so proud of her so of course, I couldn't wait to start scrapbooking the photos!

This kit was perfect because this was certainly A Moment in Time that I wanted to remember and preserve so that she can share the story of her baptism with her children some day! The photos already had blue and brown with them so I went with that color scheme for the layout.

Here is a close-up of the bottom corner of the layout. I tucked some of the lace from the kit under the photo mat. The butterfly and flower are part of this kit. The smaller flowers were from the Sea Breeze Scrapbooking Kit (now on sale for $17.50). I have often said that I like getting kits because you always have things from one kit that you can use on the next!

The dots were made using the Faded Dots Stencil from the Shades of Spring kit. And the gold striped washi tape was from the Season of Stars Kit! I used a lot of Lindy's Stamp Gang inks on this layout. You can't tell from the photo but I used one of the lighter brown/gold colors from Lindy's to color the butterflies. It didn't change the color much but it did add a beautiful gold shimmer!
