Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Barb!

Hello everyone! It's Barb and I am here to show you how to make these darling Fringe flowers!

Sometimes when I am creating a card or scrapbook layout, I want a big embellishment but can't find what I need in my stash of supplies and do not want to spend a long time making something! These flowers are quick and easy and look great!

Step 1: Start by gathering your supplies. You will need either a paper bag or crepe paper for the base and then you can use other flowers, brads and any other item you like for the center of the flower. You will also need a 1.5 inch circle piece of cardstock in a coordinating color.

Step 2: Measure a piece of crepe paper that is 12 inches long.

Step 3: Fold the crepe in half so you have one long skinny piece.

Step 4: On the folded side, start cutting from the bottom up. Be sure you don't cut it all the way. You want to leave about 1/4 inch uncut.

Step 5: I used a circle punch to cut a circle from a piece of cardstock for my base. If you don't have a circle punch, you can just cut out a circle. It doesn't need to be perfect because no one will see it. Cover the circle with glue. Any glue will work since crepe paper sticks pretty easily to any surface.

Step 6: Take your fringed piece of crepe paper and start to glue it down to the circle starting with the outside edges and working your way in.

Step 7: This is what it should look like once you have glued down all the crepe paper in a spiral manner.

Step 8: Add a flower and a brad to the center to complete!

Here are a few flowers that are complete. Notice how much dimension they give without making your page heavy and bulky.

Here is a flower made from a brown paper bag that I used in a layout. I was trying to keep this layout from being too girly since it is about my husband and daughter.

It's time for a Design Team Call!

I want to start out by saying that we have the most amazing group of ladies here that make up our design team! Each and every one is special and has become part of our Frosted Designs family! We have several designers that will be staying on with us for another term (YAY!), but we also have some that need to step down. They will be missed but the good news for you is.... now you can apply to be part of our team!

We are looking for papercrafters of all kinds! If you make scrapbook layouts, cards, altered art items, home decor items or like mixed media.... we want you!! One of the best things about Frosted Designs (in my opinion) is that we celebrate all kinds of crafters! We are not just a scrapbooking blog or a card blog. We want to let everyone share their skills and with 3 challenges going on all the time, there is something for everyone! We would like to fill some positions on all three of our teams. Let me tell you more about each one....

Fabulous Friday Teams: We have two teams of ladies that make up our Fabulous Friday teams. The focus of this team is to use up supplies you already have laying around the house that may have been neglected and forgotten about. For this team, you should be willing to do any of the following: scrapbook layouts, cards, altered art, home decor and mixed media items!

Sketch Along Tuesday Layout Team: This team makes scrapbook layouts that are inspired by the sketches we give them.

Sketch Along Tuesday Card Team: This team makes cards that are inspired by the sketches we give them.

No matter which team you prefer, the requirments for all of our designers remain the same....
1. Be willing to commit to a six month term. Your term would start the beginning of March and go until the end of August.
2. Create a project every other week for your assigned team.
3. Share a step by step tutorial 2 times during your 6 month term. (This can be with photos or video)
4. You will be required to comment on some of the projects that are entered into our challenge each week.
5. Keep an active blog that is updated frequently.
6. Post our challenge and your project on your blog on reveal day and link back to the Frosted Designs blog.

To apply to be part of this team, you will need to....

*Share with us a little information about yourself and why you want to be on the Frosted Designs Design Team.
*Provide a link to your blog.
*Provide a link to an online gallery if you have one.

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Joni!

Hi...Joni here...getting messy and dirty making a canvas... one of my fave things to "play" with!!
So here is the canvas that I'm going to show you the steps of how I made it:

So first off, I wanted to give you a little hint... When I shop at some discount places (like BIG LOTS) and I see they have canvases...and some of them are damaged... well, call over a manager and ask for a discount on the damaged ones...typically they give them to me for 50% off!!!! BINGO!!!

Here's the one I started with and you can see that I'm gonna cover that spot right up anyway!!

Ok..now before I really get started, I'm going to tell you how a canvas usually goes for me...
(it's called FLY BY THE SEAT OF YOUR PANTS ART)---
1) build a layer - don't like it
2) build another layer - kinda like it
3) build another layer.....
ETC..... so you get the picture...some of my canvases are 8-10 layers...but each layer adds dimension, and I usually learn something along the way...

So here we go,
Since I don't really know what I'm going to use yet in the line of products, I kinda started here:
Canvas (this one is 11x14)
Gesso (texture medium)
Paints and brushes
MOD PODGE (a must)
Mists
(and I've chosen to start with the HUGE chipboard letters that spell my son's name)

and I kinda decided where the letters & a photo would probably go...

So I don't have any fancy texture tools, so I just took a piece of chipboard (actually the one from the pic above that represented the photo) and punched one side with a scallop border punch.

I used a foam brush to add a generous layer of Gesso and then I "spread it" and added texture using the scallop cut piece of chipboard.

Now, while that was drying, I painted my Chipboard letters using Tim Holtz Crackle Paints (Red & Blue) and KaiserColor for the White. (I intentionally wanted the white to stand out due to letter placement)

Ok..so now I want some dimension/texture ... so TISSUE PAPER to the rescue. You know regular tissue paper that you use in gift wrapping?...Yep!!

Ripped a few pieces (large pieces, like 10x10 or bigger)...and crumple them up.

Uncrumple them and adhere to canvas with Modge Podge

I just paint the top..it seeps through the back --

I'm just sure to make sure NO SPOT of the paper is left dry.

(It's ok to have bumps, rips...etc...all adds to the texture)

Where one piece ends...add another piece... and I just kept going until all the area I wanted was covered.

Now just a comment here...I probably could have done with the "Gesso Texture" layer since I covered it up with crumpled up tissue paper...so 1) yea probably, but I hadn't planned that far in advance and 2) I think it adds just a little touch of dimension under the tissue paper anyway..even if it's really subtle.

Now..while that was drying...(a day or two)...

I used some chalk ink and gave the "Crackle Letters" some dimension:

Ok..so now that the Modge Podge is dry... PAINTING TIME... FOAM BRUSH.... Lots of paint, but big strokes since I didn't want to fill in ALL the nooks and crannies... (and NO I'm not left handed... but that's the only way I could take picture with my right hand and still "look like" I was painting...lol!!)

So let that dry...

Then I added the ALPHAS and Photo

It was a litle too stark for me, so I covered my photo and misted with some white.

Then I added some embellishments

(Crown - also painted to match, borders w/bling, boy grommet, and the date in the corner)

Here is another thing, I wanted to mention:

The chipboard letters were a little challenging to adhere since I had the letters overlapped and interwoven.
So once I adhered the sections that actually were flat against the canvas, I also adhered pieces to each other where they touched and also popped as many layers as needed in different spots...

My son has already claimed this is going to be hung up in his room...cool!!

Here it is again:

Hopefully you made it this far...without falling asleep or thinking I'm nutty (or both)!!

So...I encourage you to get messy....create a layer....if you don't like it...just add another one!!

Oh...also just a comment about the tissue paper... You can add a rubon to it (don't crumple it) and then Modge Podge it on and the rubon shows... Cool!!

I also use dress patterns (you know, like to sew clothes)...those are cool looking on a canvas.

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Fern!

Hi everyone, Fern here and I'm going to show you how to make a cute "Desk Top Mini Album". Wouldn't this be a perfect gift for a teacher for Valentine's Day?!!

Here it is closed...

Here is what you're going to need...

4 pieces of paper/cardstock.. I used SU Basic Black CS

Paper cutter

Bone folder

Tape Runner

2 pieces of 10" Ribbon

Decorative Paper

And a little "Bling" of your choice to decorate the front cover

Cut (4) - 8" by 8" pieces of paper/cardstock

1) Fold it in half.. Use bone folder..

2) Unfold.. turn the page and fold it in half again... Use bone folder

3) Unfold, and now fold the page from tip to tip and make a triangle... Use bone folder

4) Unfold, and now do the opposite tip to tip and make another triangle.. Use bone folder.

Unfold and turn over... This is what it should look like..

Now you are going to do steps 1 thru 4 again on this side.. and don't forget to use your bone folder..

It should look like this..

Now you are going to take the upper left square and "pinch" it together, while the rest of the paper comes forward/up. Sometimes it wants to go down and that is not correct...

You should have a little triangle and a 3 sided square...

Now you want to open the little triangle up and go ahead and run your tape runner on the underneath side and press tight..

Now here's what you should have...

And I do apologize for doing this in black... It's a little hard to see, but you do have the 3 sides and a little triangle here..

Now this is all you're going to do with this for the time being... Now you need to do the other 3 pieces of paper/cardstock the same way....

This is what you should have when you're finished...

Now it's time to start adding your pretty papers!!! I find it's a lot easier to decorate each box before you attach them together.. Each square should be 4" x 4", so be sure and cut your pp a little smaller...

First I add the paper on the triangle side... It's a lot easier to do this before you tape down the outside edge of the triangle.. Now you can tape the triangle down along the outside edge... You should have a pocket for a tag...

Next you are going to do the bottom... You will have to do this in 2 pieces so it can fold up when you close your album..

Here's my first box decorated...

Here's the second box... You can now put these 2 together.. You should attach a plain "photo" side with a tag side...

Here I have 3 boxes put together.. Notice how I added the ribbon under the pp under the tag side..

Here you can get an idea of how it folds up... I still have to add the 4th "box"..

Here is the final box... Notice that I've added another piece of ribbon under the pp on the photo side this time.. Do NOT tape the last box to the first box... This is so you can close your album..

I covered the front and back with this pp..

And again, my finished album!

You can't add a lot of bulk to these little albums, but you can add stickers, doilies, lace and a little bling...

I hope you enjoyed reading through my tutorial and that just maybe you will want to give it a try. They make wonderful gifts!!

I hope that everyone had a lovely start to the New Year?? Let me introduce myself, I am Amanda and I will be doing the Fabulous Friday Coordinators position, which Barb has handed over to me. Barb has done an amazing job, I only hope that I can bring the high standard to Frosted Designs that Barb has.

Coloring Your Bling by Erin Reed

Have you ever needed a specific color of a pearl or crystal, and the ones you have just don't fit? Here is a quick and easy way to color your pearls and bling with markers!!

1) Supplies - pearls, crystals, bling, gems, etc (white or clear)- Copic markers and/or Bic Mark Its in the colors of your choice

2) Use your markers to color the pearls or gems. I find it best to color them on the plastic backing before I place it on my project. When using my Copic markers I use the brush end, it is easier to apply to the gem.

3) Let the ink set for a few seconds before touching it. Both markers work the same as they are both alcohol based inks. Sharpies, crayola, or other markers (especially washable) do not work, they just rub off. These are the only two markers I have found to stay on the bling.

4) Apply your colored bling to your project and enjoy!! Your colors are only limited by your marker colors now. Try blending two different colors of markers. You can even try and color gems and pearls that are not clear to see what new colors you get, the possibilities are endless!!

Home Decor Project by Lydia!

Hello Everyone! Lydia here with a fun home project for you. I have had a blank wall in my kitchen for almost a year and finally found came up with an idea for that blank space. I found this frame at our school's fair. Now....I didn't care for the leopard picture but knew the frame would be perfect for what I was thinking.

The first thing I did was to take the print out of the frame. I attached chicken wire to the frame with a staple gun. After the wire was attached, I spray painted the whole thing.

I found these frames at a second hand shop for $1 and knew they would be perfect for the inside of the big frame.

After a coat of spray paint, they were ready to be hung with thin hobby wire.

My best friend Lynne, gave me these glass tubes for my project. They are perfect because they already had a hole in the back to be wired on. I was wanting something that could be attached easily and yet be changed out if I wanted. Thanks, Lynne....love them!!

(With the tubes being clear glass, it is really hard to photograph them well.)

I added just a wee bit of water and fresh flowers from my garden. I can change out the flowers or add wee shells or something in the tubes as I feel like it.

I love the end product!!!

So for just a few dollars, I have a great piece of art to display on my wall.

We are on the last challenge of the year and what a year it has been! We are blessed to have an wonderfully talented design team from around the world and the most loyal, friendly followers out there! We are nearing 1000 followers and we are both excited and humbled that we have so many people that want to stop by Frosted Designs for inspiration and to play along! Thank you for making this challenge blog a great place to be! With the new year, there will be a few changes. Last Tuesday you learned about Andrea becoming the new Sketch Along Tuesdays layout challenge coordinator. We would like to wish all of you and your families, a Very Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas girls! I wish you an happy day with family, friends and good food, like me! Today I show you an easy idea for a mini album that combines fabrics and papers.

You need: cardstock, fabrics, strong patterned papers, bazzils, clips, sewing machine (no experience needed), glue or duoble sides adhesive, eyelets and ribbons.

Cut 2 rectangular cardstock (6x9) for the cover and one for the thick (6x2), place them on the cloth (8x22) a few mm away from each other.

Fold the fabric to the inside and secure it with clips to hold it in position. No glue binding this!Cut the rectangle of patterned paper (8x6) that you want to use for the front and also to set the fabric along with the clips.

Sew the front cover, removing the clips and gradually proceed with the work.

Sew the thickness and finally the back.

Glue a piece of wrapping paper to reinforce the central part.

From a cardstock bazzill type, cut out 2 rectangles and glue to cover the seams.

On the central part, glue a rectangle of cloth of different color.

We now think of pages: the principle is the same. Cut some cardboard cereal box type of recovery (the number is up to you depending on the number of photos you want to use) (8x6). Cut a rectangle of cloth, of 2-3 cm bigger than the cardboard, fold the edges of the fabric, secure with clips, and sewing .

Cut a rectangle from the patterned and do on this a fake stitching to give uniformity to the album.

Paste it on the rough part to cover the seams. In this way we have all pages with a paper side and a fabric side.Insert two eyelets on each page, and two pairs of eyelets on the thickness of the cover.

Bind the pages with a ribbon. Now we have only to decorate!

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial by Debbie Bakk!

First of all, I want to say hi and thanks for stopping by today to see my second tutorial- still not real good at the high tech stuff so I have taken the best pictures I can with my little digital and working on the project at the same time, so hopefully I explain everything- ok. Well onto this cute & simple ribbon ornament- which I think looks like a pinecone.

Here are a list of the supplies you will need : A good paste/glue adhesive ( I prefer Yes paste) scissors, cardboard (use cereal boxes or scraps) 2-3 ribbon/lace of your choice (for the pinecone effect should be at least 1/2" wide ribbon) pencil or marker, glitter or Stickles (optional) other embellies such as holly-flowers etc.(optional) and last your choice of paper for decorative backing.

Now that we have all our supplies gathered we are ready to go- this should only take about 20 minutes to complete. Start by drawing an egg shape that is 2" wide by 3" high- doesnt have to be perfect( you wont see it when this project is done.) Note: cut out several or save one for a pattern to use later.

                                      Then take your ribbon (the one for the pinecone effect)
                                          which I choose a green felt ribbon and cut
                                                 14 or 15 pieces all 2"or 2 1/4" long

Then starting at the bottom of the egg shape you want to glue the ribbon pieces on- staggering them as you go- this is when a sticky paste or adhesive works best.

Do this all the way to the top leaving a little room for your bows- which should be either 14 or 15 pieces. On the top you will add your bows or other embellies of your choice and attach a ribbon for hanging also.

Now, with your paper choice you will cut an egg shape out (so that chipboard pattern will come in handy again) and will glue this to the back of the chipboard and it will also cover your ribbon that is to hang your ornament.

After you have done that you are almost done- face the pinecone ornament towards you and with your scissors notch out any areas (chipboard) that can be seen behind the ribbon

For some bling I have added a silk florist cream flower to my bows and then Stickles to the ribbon in several spots- which really shines when hanging on the tree. Now, if you want your ornament to be more 3-dimensional and seen from both sides you would just make 2 of these and glue them together (of course then you would not have to put a paper backing on them.

WHOOLAH...you have just finished a beautiful ribbon pinecone ornament to either give as a gift or put on your special tree. I hope this was informative- and you give this a try it was simple and anyone can do it. Quick Christmas gift box

Grab your supplies…..

Paper trimmer, Patterned paper, nestabilities or punches, ribbon, cropodile

Fold an A4 or A5 (depending on what size box you want) pp of your choice in half.

Mark the centre

Make a fold from the centre crease to the marking (of the centre) as shown below

Repeat on every corner so your paper looks like the picture below

Fold in half and make up the little box. With the cropodile, punch a hole on each side.

Decorate the front.

Fill with whatever you want!

Tie with ribbon to close.

Show Me Sunday - A Tutorial By Teresa Jaye!

Vintage Music Paper covered Glass Ornament

Here is a picture of the supplies you will need:

First, tear your paper (I've used sheets of vintage music)

into 25 strips approximately 1/2" wide by 5" long

then ink the edges.

Take the hanger and top off the ornament so you can hold it by putting your index finger inside of it. Apply the strips of inked papers to the ornament with Matte Mod Podge going around twice to completely cover it. Then put a good layer of Matte Mod Podge over the whole ornament.

After about an hour, the Mod Podge will be dry enough to touch the outside but still a little wet underneath. Take this opportunity to smooth down any edges with your fingers and roll the ornament about to make it nice and smooth.

Coat the ornament with a layer of Gloss/Lustre Mod Podge and let it dry over night.

Pour glass glitter in to a bowl. Paint a thick layer of Gloss/Lustre Mod Podge on the ornament
and roll it in the glitter.

Sprinkle glitter over the top, tap off the excess, and let it dry.

Collect some fun baubles, tags, feathers, flourishes and ribbon and decorate your ornament with them. If you attach your decorations to thin ribbon, you can just put the ends in the opening before putting the top back on and the top will hold them in place.
