SHOW ME SUNDAY BY: Joni -- Paint

Sunday, January 16, 2011

First, I must say that I did not come up with this idea myself. I saw it somewhere a couple years ago and I've used it several times.... it's messy, but I love the end result. I've actually done it a few times on canvases and that really looks cool...

So here is the finished layout and I'll be showing you how to use Vaseline & Paint to get that "masked" background.
Supplies:
1) your chosen background paper (patterns that you want to "peek" through work the best)
2) Paint & some type of applicator (foam brush works great)
3) Vaseline (or off brand petroleum jelly)
4) PAPER TOWELS
Kinda decide what area's are going to "peek" through at the end...
Since Vaseline does not "harden" or dry, so we will be using it to mask off portions of your background paper.
Using your fingers, spread the Vaseline on the areas you want to "peek" through (mask).
Now brush on the paint ALL OVER the background paper...even over the Vaseline.. the paint won't stick very well to the Vaseline...just keep painting til the whole paper is covered. Not thick ... just a regular coat of paint to cover the "non-Vaselined" parts.

Here is what my painted piece looked like... you can see spots where the Vaseline didn't hold the paint... that's fine!! NOW LET THE PAINT DRY!!!
After the paint is dry...comes the messy part. Get out those paper towels and WIPE OFF the Vaseline. Since the Vaseline didn't dry, it'll just be a little globby and messy, but those areas that you put Vaseline will show the background paper.

Here is my paper done wiping and ready to finish!! I laid my photo on it so you can get an idea of where I was going...
TIP: you will have some Vaseline residue on the paper...you'll need to be careful with your adhesive or use a really strong one, as some places will not want to stick very well.
And once again, I'll show the completed layout since it's all the way back at the top...lol!!!
You know, I was thinking this would look really cool with CRACKLE PAINT!!! Oh...I know what I'm trying next!!!!
